The word “tithe” is derived from the Hebrew word ma’aser and it literally means “a tenth”. The Bible refers to it as the first tenth of one’s possessions. Tithing is a percentage offering. It is giving $1 out of every $10 earned.

The tithe leverages what we have for the work that God wants to do through us. Giving the Lord, His portion reminds us that what we have is not really ours and we need to pay attention to how we use it. At the same time, we are kept in the mercy of His provision, knowing that it is from Him we receive everything we need.

Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
